About This Trip

Six days into Komodo’s wild southern frontier — cooler waters, untouched reefs, volcanic walls, manta channels, and some of the richest marine life in Indonesia.

This 6-day, 5-night expedition is designed for divers who want to go beyond the classic Central Komodo route and experience the raw, remote side of the national park. From the famous reefs around Padar and South Komodo to the legendary dive sites of Nusa Kode and the rarely visited waters around Gili Motang, this itinerary reveals a moodier, wilder, and deeply rewarding side of Komodo.

With up to 15 dives and a maximum of just 8 guests aboard Shenron, the route gives time for proper exploration. No rush south and back. No checklist diving. Just a flexible expedition shaped by tides, currents, visibility, and the experience level of the group.

South Komodo is a different world from the North. The water is often cooler, the atmosphere more dramatic, and the reefs explode with colour: soft corals, black coral bushes, sea apples, crinoids, frogfish, nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, schools of reef fish, and manta rays moving through nutrient-rich channels.

The core of the journey is Nusa Kode, one of Komodo’s most famous southern diving areas. Sites such as Cannibal Rock, Yellow Wall, Torpedo Alley, Boulders, and Crinoid Canyon are known for exceptional biodiversity, dense coral coverage, and macro life that rewards slow, patient diving. Around Manta Alley, the southern tip of Komodo Island, plankton-rich water creates one of the best chances in the park for powerful manta encounters.

This route can also include Gili Motang, one of the lesser-visited islands of Komodo National Park, where remote landscapes, wild anchorages, and rarely dived reefs add a true expedition feeling to the trip.

Between dives, the journey includes a ranger-guided Komodo dragon trek, quiet anchorages far from the crowds, chef-prepared meals, air-conditioned ensuite cabins, and long evenings beneath the southern skies of the national park.

Our guides read the conditions each morning and shape the route accordingly.

No rigid schedule. No unnecessary rush. Just the best of South Komodo, Nusa Kode, and the remote southern frontier — on the right tide, for the right group.

Typical 6-day liveaboard itinerary aboard Shenron, departing from Labuan Bajo, with up to 17 dives.

Daily Itinerary

6 days · 17 dives

The expedition begins with two dives designed to ease the group into Komodo’s currents and conditions before moving deeper into the park.

Sebayur Kecil, Mini Wall, or a sheltered central reef may be chosen for the check dive, depending on sea conditions and departure timing. It is a relaxed first dive with healthy coral, reef fish, turtles, and mild current — ideal for checking buoyancy, equipment, weighting, and group comfort.

The second dive brings the first chance for manta encounters at Manta Point or Mawan. These shallow cleaning and feeding areas are among Komodo’s most iconic manta sites, where reef mantas may glide over rubble slopes, coral bommies, and sandy channels.

After the dives, Shenron cruises south through the park toward Padar or a protected anchorage closer to the southern route. The evening is spent onboard with a full briefing for the next day’s deeper expedition south.

2 dives — Check dive & first manta opportunity

The second day moves into the dramatic landscapes around Padar and the southern entrance of Komodo.

The morning can begin at Three Sisters, a beautiful formation of submerged pinnacles covered in soft corals and surrounded by fusiliers, reef fish, and occasional reef sharks. The site is a perfect transition between Central and South Komodo: more dramatic, more colourful, and more exposed to changing conditions.

The next dives may include Pillarsteen, Secret Garden, or Padar’s southern reefs. These sites are known for volcanic topography, swim-throughs, ridges, colourful walls, and a real sense of exploration. Depending on season and visibility, the reefs around Padar can be spectacular, with soft corals, macro life, and schools of fish moving along the slopes.

When conditions allow, the day may include the iconic Padar viewpoint hike. During the dry season, sunrise or late-afternoon timing gives the best light over the island’s three-coloured bays.

By evening, Shenron continues south toward Komodo’s remote southern anchorages.

3 dives + possible Padar hike — South route positioning day

  • Padar Hike

This is the first full immersion into South Komodo.

The day focuses on the famous southern sites around the tip of Komodo Island, including Manta Alley, End of the World, German Flag, or nearby exposed reefs depending on tide and current.

Manta Alley is one of the most iconic sites in the region. Located in the plankton-rich channels of South Komodo, it can deliver powerful manta encounters, sometimes with multiple rays circling, feeding, or passing through the channel. The site can be wild and current-sensitive, so timing is everything.

Other nearby South Komodo sites offer dramatic underwater landscapes: boulder formations, surge-washed slopes, walls, swim-throughs, and reefs covered in soft coral. Marine life can include mantas, reef sharks, giant trevally, turtles, schooling fish, and excellent macro subjects tucked into the reef.

The atmosphere here is very different from the classic Central Komodo sites. Fewer boats, cooler water, stronger ocean energy, and a feeling of being far away from everything.

3 dives — Manta Alley, End of the World / German Flag / South Komodo reefs

The heart of the expedition.

Nusa Kode is one of the most celebrated areas in South Komodo, famous for dense coral growth, cooler nutrient-rich water, and extraordinary biodiversity. This is slow, detailed, high-quality diving — the kind of diving where every square metre of reef is alive.

The day may begin at Cannibal Rock, one of Komodo’s most legendary dive sites. This volcanic mound is covered in crinoids, soft corals, sea apples, sponges, tunicates, and macro life. Divers can search for frogfish, nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, cuttlefish, scorpionfish, and an incredible density of reef creatures.

Yellow Wall offers a completely different profile: a colourful vertical wall saturated in yellow, orange, and red soft corals. It is one of the most photogenic southern sites when the light and visibility are right.

The third dive may be at Boulders, Crinoid Canyon, or Torpedo Alley depending on conditions. Torpedo Alley is especially famous for its sandy and rubble bottom, where careful eyes may spot unusual macro life, including electric rays, nudibranchs, pipefish, frogfish, and other rare critters.

The boat anchors overnight near Nusa Kode or in a sheltered southern bay, surrounded by one of the most remote landscapes in Komodo National Park.

  • Dragon Encounter on beach

Day five pushes the expedition feeling even further.

Depending on sea conditions, tide, and park access, Shenron explores the remote southern waters around Gili Motang or lesser-dived reefs between Nusa Kode, Rinca, and South Komodo. This is the flexible exploration day — the one that makes the 6D5N route special.

Gili Motang is one of the lesser-visited islands of the national park, known for its remote character and wild landscapes. Diving in this area is highly condition-dependent, but when the sea allows, it offers a rare opportunity to explore reefs that receive far less traffic than the central sites.

Possible dives may include remote ridges, coral slopes, boulder sites, walls, or macro-focused reefs selected by the guides on the day. The goal is not to force a fixed site list, but to use Shenron’s flexibility to find the best water, best visibility, and safest current window.

If Gili Motang is not suitable, the day remains focused on South Komodo’s strongest available sites, with possible repeats at the best Nusa Kode locations or a return to Manta Alley if manta conditions look promising.

In the afternoon, the boat begins moving north toward Komodo or Rinca for the dragon trek, depending on park schedule and anchorage conditions.

3 dives — Gili Motang exploration or best available South Komodo / Nusa Kode sites

The final morning balances wildlife, scenery, and one last dive before returning to Labuan Bajo.

The day includes a ranger-guided trek to see Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. Depending on the route, conditions, and park arrangements, this may take place on Komodo Island or Rinca. The trek offers a chance to experience the dry savannah landscapes, local wildlife, and the famous dragons that make the national park unique.

If flight times and safety intervals allow, the final dive may be planned at a gentle central site such as Pink Beach, Siaba, Mawan, or another protected reef on the way back north. This final dive is usually chosen for beauty, comfort, and safe timing rather than current intensity.

After the dive, brunch is served onboard during the scenic cruise back to Labuan Bajo.

1 dive + Komodo dragon trek + return cruise to Labuan Bajo

Check-out: By 14:00 at Labuan Bajo harbour.
Flight planning: Book departures from 16:00 onwards to allow a comfortable margin. A minimum 18-hour surface interval after the last dive is observed before flying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking your Komodo liveaboard trip.

Komodo offers year-round diving, but each season has its own highlights. April to June is the sweet spot: warm water (26–29 °C), excellent visibility up to 30 m, calm seas, and peak pelagic action as nutrient-rich currents sweep through after the wet season. July–August brings cooler southern waters (20–25 °C) that attract massive manta aggregations at Manta Alley — visibility drops to 10–15 m due to plankton, but the marine life is extraordinary. September–November offers calmer surface conditions and reliable manta sightings in the central route. December–March is wet season with occasional rain and choppier seas, but far fewer boats and excellent macro diving.

A minimum PADI Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) certification is strongly recommended. Komodo is known for its currents — sites like Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, and Shotgun require drift diving experience and solid buoyancy control. Some central and northern sites are accessible to confident Open Water divers, but southern sites like Manta Alley involve stronger currents and thermoclines. We recommend a minimum of 30 logged dives. If you hold an Open Water certification, consider completing your Advanced course before your trip — or contact us to discuss your options.

Currents in Komodo range from mild to extreme depending on the site, the tide, and the moon phase. Popular sites like Batu Bolong and Crystal Rock can produce 3–4 knot currents, and unexpected downcurrents are possible at exposed pinnacles. That said, experienced dive guides read the conditions before every dive and adjust the plan accordingly — choosing the right entry point, depth, and timing. You will always dive with a guide at a maximum ratio of 4 divers per guide. Carrying a surface marker buoy (SMB) is mandatory.

Starting April 2026, the Indonesian government enforces a daily visitor cap of 1,000 people across the core zones of Komodo National Park. The quota is divided into three timed sessions of approximately 300–330 visitors each. All entries must be pre-booked through the official SiOra application — walk-in visits are no longer possible. Liveaboard guests benefit from guaranteed quota slots secured by the operator during booking. Park entrance fees remain at IDR 250,000 (approx. USD 17) per day for foreign visitors. Booking your liveaboard in advance is now more important than ever, especially during the June–September peak season.

Day trips depart from Labuan Bajo at around 7:30 AM and return by 5:00 PM, with 2–3 hours of transit time each way and typically 2–3 dives. A liveaboard eliminates transit: you wake up anchored at the dive site and can do 3–4 dives per day across a much wider area. Iconic sites in the south like Manta Alley, Cannibal Rock, and Torpedo Alley are only reachable by liveaboard. You also get to visit Padar Island, Pink Beach, and see Komodo dragons — experiences that require overnight stays within the park.

Komodo National Park is home to a resident population of over 1,000 manta rays, so sightings are possible year-round. The two main sites are Manta Point (Karang Makassar) in the central route — a shallow drift over a rubble plateau with multiple cleaning stations — and Manta Alley at the southern tip of Komodo Island, where aggregations of 20–50 individuals are common. Peak manta season runs from June to October when plankton-rich currents draw large numbers to feed. On multi-day trips (5D4N and longer), you will typically visit both sites.

Water temperature in Komodo varies dramatically between north and south. Northern sites (Castle Rock, Crystal Rock) stay warm at 26–29 °C year-round. Southern sites (Cannibal Rock, Manta Alley) can drop to 19–22 °C due to cold upwellings, especially between July and September. A 5 mm wetsuit is recommended for south dives, and many divers add a hooded vest. For the north, a 3 mm suit is usually sufficient. We recommend bringing both options if you are joining a trip that covers all areas.

Yes. Nitrox (EANx 32) is available for all Nitrox-certified divers. It is highly recommended for multi-day liveaboard trips in Komodo — the enriched air extends your no-decompression limits and reduces fatigue across 3–4 dives per day. You can add Nitrox during booking or request it on board. If you are not yet certified, consider completing the PADI Enriched Air Diver course before your trip.

Trip packages typically include full-board meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks), cabin accommodation with AC and ensuite bathroom, 3–4 guided dives per day with tanks and weights, land excursions (Komodo dragon trek, Padar Island hike, Pink Beach), drinking water, tea, and coffee. Not included: Komodo National Park entrance fees (paid separately, approx. USD 17/day for foreign visitors), equipment rental, Nitrox upgrade, alcoholic beverages, crew gratuity, and travel insurance. Check each trip listing for exact inclusions.

Most Komodo liveaboard routes stay within the sheltered waters of the national park, so conditions are generally calm. However, crossings between the northern and southern areas can produce moderate swells, especially during July–September. If you are prone to motion sickness, take preventive medication (such as Dramamine or Stugeron) before boarding and stay hydrated. Ginger tea and wristbands also help. Sleeping in a midship cabin, staying on deck in fresh air, and keeping your eyes on the horizon are all effective strategies.

Labuan Bajo (LBJ / Komodo Airport) is the gateway to Komodo National Park. Direct flights operate daily from Bali/Denpasar (DPS) — the flight takes about 1 hour. There are also connections from Jakarta (CGK) and from Surabaya (SUB). We recommend arriving at least one day before your liveaboard departure to account for any flight delays. Transfers from Labuan Bajo airport or your hotel to the boat are typically included or easily arranged.

Yes. Komodo offers exceptional snorkeling at many sites, and non-diving companions can join land excursions to see Komodo dragons, hike Padar Island, relax at Pink Beach, and enjoy the onboard experience. Some boats offer a dedicated snorkeling guide. Contact us before booking to confirm availability and pricing for non-diving guests.

Essential items: your dive certification card and logbook, a surface marker buoy (SMB) and whistle, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and light windbreaker, personal medication (including seasickness remedies), a rashguard or UV shirt, and a waterproof bag for electronics. If you own your own mask, fins, and dive computer, bring them — personal gear always fits better. Full equipment rental is available if needed. Note: diving gloves are not permitted in Komodo National Park, and fishing equipment is prohibited.

All liveaboards carry emergency oxygen kits, first aid supplies, fire extinguishers, life jackets, and life rafts. Communication equipment includes a satellite phone, VHF radio, and GPS. The nearest hyperbaric chamber is located at Siloam Hospital in Labuan Bajo. Dive guides carry SMBs and safety reels on every dive. A pre-trip safety briefing covers emergency procedures, dive signals, and boat evacuation protocols.

A 30% deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your spot. The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure. Free cancellation is available up to 90 days before the departure date — your deposit is fully refunded. Cancellations between 60–90 days receive a 50% deposit refund. Within 60 days of departure, the deposit is non-refundable. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel and dive insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and hyperbaric treatment.
